Many people experience pain in their feet, legs and often lower back, as a result of improper foot function. This “fact” is accepted by most health professionals. It has been estimated that as much as 80% of lower back pain is caused by improper foot functioning!
An evaluation by the podiatrist can determine the extent to which the symptoms described above may be related to foot functioning and the most appropriate arch support or orthotic can be prescribed.
Though over the counter supports can sometimes be helpful, and are certainly less expensive than those prescribed by doctors, much of the time these “supports” do not address the condition creating the pain and a custom orthotic is then more beneficial.
The extent to which one’s particular foot problem is likely to be helped by an orthotic device is certainly very variable, but the likelihood of success should be discussed with your podiatrist.
