INGROWN TOE NAILS

Another very common problem that podiatrists are called upon to treat. This refers to pain on the side of the toe nail that occurs when a portion of nail is “curved” and presses upon the surrounding flesh.

Often redness may be present or, in cases of more advanced conditions, pus and “proud flesh” may be noted and bleeding might be quite frequent.

If the condition has been chronic, a simple, office surgical procedure can be performed using a local anesthetic and the offending portion of toe nail can be removed. If the procedure is intended to be a “permanent” correction, there is generally a 70-80% chance that the ingrown nail will not return.
