BUNIONS

Also known as “hallux valgus” or Tailor’s bunion , these problems are generally bony protuberances either involving the big toe or the outside of the foot.

Usually, heredity plays a large part in the development of these problems, but they can be aggravated by shoes. It is typically the fashion in which one walks that leads to their development and worsening.

If a patient can wear shoes comfortably and is not in pain from the bunion, surgery is generally not needed; if the bunion is creating other problems, is interfering with proper shoe gear utilization and/or is painful, then surgery can be considered.

There are many types of surgical procedures that can be performed, depending upon the nature of the bunion and its severity. The procedure and attendant recuperation necessary need to be discussed with your doctor.

If a patient is not interested in pursuing a surgical correction of the condition or is not a good candidate for surgery, shoe accommodations, changes in shoe size and orthotic devices can help remove pressure and control some of the abnormal forces that are present which are responsible for some of the pain.
